From the Principal
Only sixteen more days of school remain after today. We have lots going on in the next three weeks. Please check the Friday Note and your child’s backpack for information about end-of-the-year activities. Please remember because of our snow day earlier this year the last day of school will be Tuesday, June 1.
As we get closer to the end of the year students anxiously await the last day of school. All the teachers still have a lot to accomplish in their classrooms. There will be a lot of instruction going on these last few days of the year. We have a lot of important information to teach to our students to prepare them for their next grade level.
Summer Reading Program
Again this summer I will be having my summer reading program. Each student will also receive postcards with the school’s address on them. I am asking that after a student finishes a book they send me a postcard with information about which book they read, and what they liked about the book. When school starts next August I will have a special surprise for those who participate. Parents, look for more information to come.
Helping Your Child Over Summer Break
Sometimes students struggle to retain information that they learn during the school year over the summer. Reading and math are the two areas in which summer learning loss is the most common. There are a variety of ways parents can help their students in prevention of learning loss.
Enroll a child in an educational summer program.
- Tutor your child or hire a tutor for the summer.
- Take a family field trip. Educational day trips can enhance summer learning.
- Play learning games with your child.
- Schedule a summer study time. There is a wide variety of information on the World Wide Web to assist parents during the summer.
- Set a daily reading time for your child.
- Consistently practice math over the summer.

CHAPEL OFFERING
Thank you to all for a great month of chapel offerings! During April, you gave $728.14 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The sixth grade won the lunch at Olive Garden for donating $301.36. Way to go sixth grade and way to go First Lutheran!!
The offering during May will be going to the Salvation Army. You may bring money for the offering plate, or you may bring items for children/infants. They need items for “care packs” year round. Items needed: no tears shampoo, baby lotion, baby powder, coloring books, small toys, diaper bags and back packs.
PANTY HOSE NEEDED
No, Mrs. Davis has not gone crazy again…we really do need panty hose for art class. We only need one good leg, so if you have any that are destined for the trash, run them through the laundry, and send them to school! We’ll cut off the good leg and make something really COOL in 5th and 6th grade Art classes! THANKS!
The FLS ALUMNI BAND is now forming!
We have 34 students to date who are playing in the Alumni Band. We will practice Tuesday May 18 at 3:30. The concert is Tuesday evening at 6:30. This is going to be SO much fun! Alumni Band members have the opportunity to be excellent role models for the younger students. If you have not yet contacted me, and want to play in our band, send me an email at dovelove_us@yhoo.com
I will need your mailing address to send you the sheet music and a CD of the tunes. If you need an instrument, let me know that, too. Saied Music Co. has generously agreed to donate the use of any band instruments we need. I can’t WAIT!!! Mrs. Davis
FIRST LUTHERAN TALENT SHOW
